Stock Market Update (September 16, 2024):
U.S. markets ended Monday on a mixed note. The S&P 500 saw a modest rise of 0.4%, driven by gains in the tech and healthcare sectors. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq ticked up 0.5%, with Apple and Tesla reporting strong early-week performances. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.2% due to declines in industrial and energy stocks, reflecting concerns over a potential economic slowdown later this year.

Real Estate Update:
The U.S. housing market remains sluggish despite lower mortgage rates, which dropped to an average of 6.9% for 30-year fixed-rate loans. August saw a minor 0.6% increase in home sales, but affordability issues persist, especially in coastal regions like California and New York, where demand remains subdued due to high home prices and continued inflationary pressures.

Economic Update:
New U.S. retail sales data for August show a 0.7% increase, exceeding analysts' expectations. This boost was driven by strong back-to-school shopping and rising gasoline prices, though core retail sales, which exclude autos and gas, increased by just 0.2%. The data adds to the mixed signals about the U.S. economy, as consumer spending remains resilient despite ongoing inflationary pressures and high interest rates.

Political Update – Trump Assassination Attempt:
On September 15, 2024, former President Donald Trump was the target of a second apparent assassination attempt while golfing at his West Palm Beach golf club in Florida. Authorities arrested 31-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, who was found with an AK-47-style rifle and a GoPro camera near the course. Trump was unharmed, as Secret Service agents spotted the rifle in time and opened fire, forcing Routh to flee. He was apprehended 40 miles from the scene after a brief chase. The FBI and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident, and Routh faces state and potentially federal charges. This follows an earlier attempt on Trump’s life in July during a rally​.
